Author & Award Winning Photographer,
Principal Photographer of Phinishing Touches, LLC / Renee L. Ferguson Photography
Renee Ferguson is a gifted documentary and portrait photographer who lives and breathes her craft. Born and raised in the Wild & Wonderful state of West Virginia, she dedicates much of her time to capturing intriguing stories through both photos and words.
Her passion for African-American history is deeply rooted in the stories she heard as a child, stories that revealed her family had a town named after them. This rich heritage fuels her creative spirit, which also shines through in her work as a digital painter. With a remarkable eye for color, Renee creates keepsakes on canvas that leave their owners in awe.
Renee has an extraordinary ability to connect with her clients, turning each photo shoot into a memorable experience that feels like family. She currently resides with her loving husband and beautiful granddaughter, continuing to create stunning art and cherished memories.
Poet, Performer, Publisher of Publication, Black By God - The West Virginian
In the heart of West Virginia, where the ancient mountains rise and fall like the breath of the earth itself, Crystal Good, a poet, performer and publisher has found a home for her voice. It echoes with the rich, multifaceted identity of Affrilachia. As an Affrilachian Poet, Crystal is more than just a writer; she is a storyteller who bridges the gaps between cultures, times, and dimensions, much like the tectonic plates she imagines once
linked her beloved Appalachia to the vastness of Africa.
Crystal’s roots run deep in the hills of West Virginia, and her words carry the weight of its history, struggles, and enduring spirit. An Irene McKinney Scholar, she wields her pen with the same unyielding force that the legendary steel driver John Henry used to wield his mighty hammer at the Great Bend Tunnel in Talcott, West Virginia. Her work, however, isn’t confined to the local, it stretches across borders, cultures, and even the very fabric of reality, touching on environmental concerns, cultural identity, gender equality, and quantum physics. She creates a fusion as unique as the poet herself.
Her connection to West Virginia is profound, and it was on full display on January 21, 2017, when she stood before an enthusiastic crowd at the state Capitol in Charleston, West Virginia, to read her Black Diamonds poem as part of the 2017 West Virginia Women’s March. In that moment, Crystal wasn’t just a poet; she was a voice for the people, a conduit for the land that she so deeply loves. In 2020, Crystal founded a publication called Black By God that enhanced her skills as an exceptional journalist.
Hello - My name is Renee L. Ferguson!
As a photographer, I wanted to find a personal project that was meaningful and enjoyable. Initially, I considered focusing on macro photography because I knew I'd enjoy it, but I realized it might not make much of an impact beyond my own satisfaction.
This journey began with a nudge from none other than Matthew Jordan Smith, the first African
American Nikon Ambassador, who encouraged me to embark on a personal project that would
intertwine my passions. I accepted the challenge, merging my love for photography, my deep interest
in African American / Black history, and my pride in West Virginia's rich cultural heritage. The result is a
project that shines a spotlight on African Americans who have risen to prominence in fields ranging
from entertainment to religion, from academia to the military.
"The Diamonds of West Virginia," which seeks to shine a light on the rich and often untold stories of African Americans in our beautiful state. This project is a labor of love, aiming to celebrate and preserve the legacies of remarkable individuals who have shaped both local and national history.
To bring this vision to life, I am reaching out for your support. Any contribution, large or small, would help us ensure that these important stories are shared and honored as they deserve to be. Your support not only aids in the completion of this book but also in celebrating our shared history and community spirit.
Thank you for helping to immortalize the narratives of our hidden gems.
Love,
Renee
